Syracuse, New York – July 26, 2006 For the sixth consecutive year, the nations largest and most comprehensive study on GLBT Demographic and Consumer Behavior – GL Consumer Online Census - runs now until August 21, 2006 at www.glcensus.org. Covering GLBT specific social issues like parenting, politics, marriage/civil unions, the GLCensus include consumer categories such as media habits, autos, finance, travel, home, food & beverage and demographics in the most in-depth and specific study ever.
“The goal of the GL Consumer Online Census, an annual online study that collects responses from Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) individuals, is to educate and inform the business community and society”, said Dan Fedrizzi of OpusComm.
The survey, now in its sixth year, is a joint venture between OpusComm Group and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Last year the survey attracted thousands of respondents throughout the country and around the globe. This year’s survey runs now until Aug. 21, 2006 and invites the entire GLBT community to log onto www.glcensus.org to "Stand Up And Be Counted" in the largest annual study of the GLBT community and their consumer behavior.
“The GLCensus helps paint a clearer picture of the GLBT community – their relationships, their families, their politics and their consumer and media habits” comments Jeff Garber, President of OpusComm Group. Garber continues, “When it comes to consumer behavior, families, children, economics, employment, the GLCensus reveals that the GLBT community is deeply seated in values, social and economic concerns, not unlike the rest of America”.
Parenting weighs in heavily with 72% feeling that parental rights in same-sex unions is extremely important as 21% of females and 5% of male respondents have at least one child under the age of 18 living at home. “The presence of children in gay households shows the importance of gays to be parents “, Amy Falkner of Syracuse University (S.I Newhouse School of Communications), lead researcher. Falkner also observes that adoption is significant with the Gay community with those who have at least one child, 38% of males and 62% of females resulted from adoption.”
"Information of this kind can go a long way in helping straight America understand the issues of GLBT people," said Jeffrey Garber, president of OpusComm Group. "And it helps business understand and market to the GLBT consumer."
“The visibility marketing affords is crucial in fostering more understanding between gay Americans and straight Americans”, said Amy Falkner of Syracuse University.
